IMPROVEMENT OF INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE ROMA SETTLEMENT

In the Roma settlement on the "Crvena Zvezda", based on preventive actions to improve quality of life of the population in Palilula, it is provided the material for spreading the network infrastructure. According of agreement in the Palilula Municipality, employees of the Enterprise for the Roads Nis, drove three trucks of  grit. Member of the Municipal Council, Milos Stojkovic who coordinates this activity and Salih Saitović, chairman of the Democratic Left of Roma in Nis, in talks with residents of settlement pointed out and other programs of support and assistance of local government that would follow by the end of the year. “We are trying, through projects, in cooperation with the city and donors to provide additional funds for this purpose, emphasized Stojkovic, member of Municipal Council.

After the recent visit of Roma settlements on the territory of the Palilula Municipality, the local office of “Crvena Zvezda”, “Stocni trg” and “Mramorska” by Palilula Municipality president, Prof Dr Igor Novakovic, representative of government and institutions of the city and the Democratic Left of Roma in Serbia represented by Jovan Damnjanović, deputy and vice-president of international Roma organizations, with associates, and activities have begun to solve the problems of quality of life of the Roma population in this region.It was agreed that the first preventive measure will be spreading paths in the Roma settlement in MK "Crvena Zvezda" with grit in order to ensure minimum of hygienic conditions of movement of inhabitants.

In Palilula Municipality,  on census in year 2002, according to national or ethnic origin was recorded 3435 people from the Roma population, although this number is higher by settling of families from Kosovo and the return from the countries of Europe. The problem of their lack of economic development and inadequate social status has become a major problem. Roma children are mostly outside the school system, their parents are unemployed, most families living in unhygienic conditions on the outskirts of the city and  not urbanized areas.
